Describe the job the same way to everyone
Quotes are only comparable if every plumber is pricing the same work. Describe the job clearly, send the same photos and measurements, and say who will supply the fittings. If you change your mind about something, tell everyone.
Compare the scope, not just the total
Look at what each quote includes. One may cover new isolating valves, flexible connectors and making good; another may assume everything goes smoothly and charge extra if it doesn't.
- Exactly what will be removed, fitted and connected
- Which parts are included, and their quality
- Whether making good, tiling or other finishing work is included
- Disposal of old fittings and waste
- How unexpected problems will be priced

Fixed price or hourly rate?
For defined jobs, a fixed price is easier to compare and budget for. For diagnosis or unpredictable work, an hourly rate may be fairer – but ask for an estimate of how long it will take, and whether there's a minimum charge.
| Fixed price | Hourly rate | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Clearly defined jobs | Diagnosis and unpredictable work |
| Budget certainty | High | Lower |
| Risk if it takes longer | Plumber's | Yours |
Fixed price or hourly rate
Beyond the price
Consider availability, how clearly the plumber explained the job, their insurance, any guarantee and reviews from previous customers. The cheapest quote isn't always the best value, and the most expensive isn't always the best job.
