About the plumber

Start with the basics. A professional plumber will be happy to answer these questions and show evidence where relevant.

  • Do you have public liability insurance? Can I see the certificate?
  • How long have you been working as a plumber?
  • Have you done similar jobs recently? Can I see photos or reviews?
  • If the job involves gas, are you Gas Safe registered? (Check the register online.)
  • If it involves an unvented cylinder, are you qualified to work on them?

About the price

Make sure you understand exactly what you're paying for.

  • Is this a fixed price or based on an hourly rate?
  • Is there a call-out or minimum charge?
  • What's included, and what would cost extra?
  • Are parts included, and who supplies the fittings?
  • Do you charge VAT?
  • When do you expect payment, and do you need a deposit?

About the work

Understanding how the job will be done helps you plan around it.

  • When can you start, and how long will it take?
  • Will the water be off, and for how long?
  • Will you need to lift floors or open walls? Who will make good?
  • How will you protect floors and furniture?
  • Will you take away old fittings and waste?
  • Is there a guarantee on the workmanship and parts?

Warning signs

Most plumbers are honest and hard-working, but it's worth being cautious if someone pressures you to decide on the spot, asks for full payment up front, won't put a quote in writing or can't show proof of insurance. A very low quote may have left something out – ask what's included before you accept it.

Common questions

Do plumbers need to be registered in the UK?

There's no single compulsory registration for general plumbing, but anyone working on gas must be Gas Safe registered, and work on unvented cylinders needs a suitable qualification. Some plumbers also belong to schemes such as WaterSafe.

Should I pay a deposit?

For larger jobs, a deposit to cover materials is common. Avoid paying the full amount before the work starts.

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three is usually enough to understand the going rate and compare approaches.
