What affects the cost

  • Your hot water system – working with what you have is cheaper than changing it
  • Surface-mounted or concealed – concealed valves mean chasing walls and retiling
  • Electrical work – a new or more powerful electric shower may need a new circuit
  • A pump – needed for weak tank-fed showers, adding the cost of the pump and its installation
  • Waterproofing and tiling – essential for walk-in showers and wet rooms
  • Access and the condition of existing pipework

Electric, mixer or power shower?

Electric showers are usually cheapest to replace like for like and work independently of the boiler. Mixer showers can give a better flow but depend on your hot water system. Power showers and pumps only suit tank-fed systems. Choosing the right type for your home avoids paying twice.

Keeping the cost down

Reusing the existing pipework and fixing positions, choosing a surface-mounted valve, and replacing a tired electric shower with a similar model are the cheapest routes. If you're refitting the bathroom anyway, that's the time for concealed valves and new layouts, while the walls are open.

Common questions

How long does it take to fit a shower?

A like-for-like replacement can take half a day. A new shower with pipework, tray and enclosure may take a few days plus tiling.

Do I need an electrician for an electric shower?

Replacing like for like on a suitable existing circuit is often a plumbing job. A new or higher-powered shower may need a new circuit, which must be done by a qualified person.

Is a walk-in shower more expensive than a standard enclosure?

Usually, because of the larger tray or wet room floor, waterproofing and glass screen.
