Where to look

Personal recommendations from friends, family and neighbours are still one of the best starting points, especially for someone who has done similar work nearby. Online reviews help too, as long as you read them carefully – look for detailed reviews that mention the type of job you need.

Requesting quotes online means you describe the job once and hear from local plumbers who cover your area, which saves ringing round and makes it easier to compare.

Checks before you hire

  • Public liability insurance – ask to see the certificate
  • Gas Safe registration for any work on gas appliances or pipes, checked on the Gas Safe Register
  • The right qualification for unvented hot water cylinders if relevant
  • Membership of schemes such as WaterSafe, which lists approved plumbers for water fittings
  • Examples of similar recent work, or references
  • A business address and landline or established mobile number

Get it in writing

For anything beyond a small repair, ask for a written quote that lists the work, parts and exclusions, the price and whether it includes VAT, the start date and payment terms. Clear quotes make it easier to compare plumbers and to resolve any disagreement later.

Warning signs

Be cautious of anyone who cold calls or knocks on your door offering work, insists on cash up front, pressures you to decide immediately, won't give a written quote, or quotes far below everyone else without explaining why. A good plumber will be happy to answer questions and give you time to decide.

Common questions

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three is usually enough to compare prices and approaches.

Do plumbers have to be registered?

There's no single compulsory registration for general plumbing, but anyone working on gas must be Gas Safe registered.

Should I pay a deposit?

For larger jobs, a deposit for materials is common. Avoid paying the full amount up front.
