Why some tap swaps take longer
Removing the old tap is often the hardest part. Nuts underneath sinks are hard to reach and frequently seized with scale or corrosion. Bath taps can be hidden behind panels and walls. If there are no isolating valves, the water may have to be turned off at the stopcock, and old pipework may need adapting to suit modern flexible connectors.
- Seized or corroded nuts under the sink
- No isolating valves – a plumber may fit them
- Changing from two pillar taps to one mixer (may need a new sink or basin)
- Bath taps behind tiled panels
- Specialist taps with filters, boilers or pull-out sprays

Choosing a tap that will work
Check the number of tap holes in your sink or basin, the reach of the spout and – importantly – the minimum water pressure the tap needs. Many modern taps are designed for higher pressures and run slowly on tank-fed hot water. If you're not sure what system you have, ask the plumber before buying.
Repair instead?
If your tap is only dripping, a new washer or cartridge may be all it needs. Replacement makes sense if the tap is old, corroded, parts are unavailable or you simply want a change of style.
